The Cannes Film Festival opens on Tuesday, May 13. Iris Knobloch, who succeeded Pierre Lescure as director of the Cannes festival in 2023, discusses in an interview with La Croix the major challenges of an event opening in a troubled geopolitical context and her determination to give women directors their rightful place.
La Croix: In a troubled geopolitical context, you recently recalled the historic mission of the Cannes Film Festival. What role can it play?
Iris Knobloch: The power of cinema is to convey messages, to tell stories about other cultures, and to reflect what concerns our societies. Last year, many of the films in the selection addressed the condition of women, even when they were directed by men. In a world where we see a strong temptation to withdraw into ourselves, it is essential to protect this diversity of voices.
